Welcome to Orcas: Killer Beauties; always offering information about Orca whales in English and Spanish. You're invited to come inside and feel your self at home; where you can look at photos of these graceful ocean mammals dressed in black. Markings on the dorsal fin.
As with many other cetaceans, Orcas all have markings on their dorsal fins. The dorsal fin itself and the markings are always different from those found on other members of the same pod.
The shape of the dorsal fin itself and the markings on them, are what the scientists use to individually identify these animals. Sometimes they identify them with common names, but mostly scientist use the initials of the pod to which the animal belongs and a number, something like "A20-M06"
